I live in New Orleans, Louisiana, aka The Big Easy. This place is littered with gorgeous historic buildings like antebellum plantations, shaded in 200 year-old Oak trees with Spanish moss dripping from their massive branches. The barns and slave quarters on the properties still stand and are pristinely maintained. While these buildings may seem unconventional venues for a wedding, down here, they’re showstoppers.
One popular plantation in particular (say that ten times fast) is Houmas House in Darrow, La. It took me 20 minutes to walk across the grounds, not because it’s a mile long, just because in every single corner there is a luscious garden with statues and water fountains. I’m telling you, the sights and sounds of those gardens would make a grown man cry. So, when I was asked to paint an outdoor ceremony there, I squeaked a “yes, please!”
On Sunday morning, September 30th 2018, London and Devan, joined by about 30 of their closest friends and family and his three children, exchanged vows under a magnificent Oak, with the plantation in the background. The only decorations they used were a few white chairs, and a table under the tree to use during the ceremony. Sounds of birds chirping harmonized with the string quartet as they played intermittently throughout the service. The brunch-style reception that followed was held in a small ballroom a few yards away, and that is where I completed the painting of the ceremony scene.
